They went to the entrance of the cave and looked out.

It was indeed black as night, although the stars were shinning bright. There was a fir tree a little way off but otherwise no sign of life. Then they heard a jingling and jangling and some huffing and puffing and suddenly out of the darkness appeared a sleigh which skidded to a stop close by. It was pulled by eight reindeer and driven by an chubby old man in a red robe with a flowing white beard. There were several other very small passengers dressed all in red and green and a pile of parcels stacked high. The old man in the red suit looked a trifle flustered and it was obvious that they had lost some of the packages overboard as they  had landed  He left  some presents under the fir tree and then re-loaded the others back onto the sleigh. The little group of friends watched all this 'goings on' from the shelter of the cave and wondered who was this strange old man and his helpers.

While the man in red fed his team of reindeer some hay  the little helpers were  busy making a snowman. Somewhere they  had found a battered old blue hat and a red scarf to finish off their work of art. The old man took out his  pocket watch and was heard to tut, tut and say

" How will I ever get around the world in 24 hours this Christmas Eve? I have four new  reindeers this year and the team are not pulling smoothly. I hope we do not loose anything else "

He then  looked up at the snowman  and said

"Hurry up, hurry up. Hey, that's my  hat and scarf "

and then, for the first time, he saw the four  little creatures staring at him.

" Well I'm blowed what are you all doing here all alone? Are you part of my cargo? Where is that list ?No time to find it now. Hop on, hop on  and I will give you a lift home"

No sooner had he said the words than all four of the friends jumped  onto the sleigh. With a whoooooooooooosh  they were up and away. (click on sleigh)

But alas, poor Lfant had not hung on tight enough and when they banked, none too smoothly, he was pitched back down to earth and landed near the fir tree with a bump. Now what was he to do? Now he really was all alone. Well not quite: there was the snowman but what help was a snowman? Someone must live close  as who else were all the presents under the tree for. He had heard that in Lapland the houses got covered in snow right up to their rooftops so there could be a house close by and he would never see it.

Before he  could get really sad  the  snowy  figure moved slightly and raised his hat and said,

"May I be of service?"

 Lfant said with a sigh

"I want to go home where my friends are"

" No sooner said than done my friend. Touch one of the presents under the tree  and you will meet up with them in the blink of an eye. They will not even notice that you were missing"
